Anupama, a software engineer in Virginia was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia in December 2001 during a routine check when the doctor found her to be anemic. She had given birth to a baby boy only six months earlier.
The diagnosis came as a shock to the 29-year-old, particularly as she had led a very active career oriented life. She received the first cycle of chemotherapy, and went into remission for two years. There was a relapse in 2004.
With a heavy heart and utmost sorrow, we report the passing of Anupama on Friday, February 11, 2005. Anupama put up a valiant fight but eventually succumbed to this dreaded disease. Her courage and determination inspired all of us at SAMAR and we conducted many drives with the hope of saving her life, but sadly this was not to be. She leaves behind a grieving husband and a son. Our hearts go out to them and we pray that God gives them strength to go through this difficult and trying time. We send our heartfelt condolences to her husband, son and other family members.
